Hi, there. Maggie
Shaw here, proud owner of Eregendal and author.
As a lifelong
lover of reading, each month I choose one of my favourite books – and tell you
all about it.
For January’s Book
of the Month I have chosen We Are One – A Manifesto for Humanity by Simenon
Honoré (2010). Simenon taught History, Politics and meditation for over 25
years. He was a political and spiritual activist and helped set up self-help
groups after working through his own personal healing. This is one of seven
books available in paperback or Kindle version from his website www.spiritoftherainbow.org and can
also be found on Amazon.
We Are One offers a practical
vision of a society based on the interconnectedness of all life, through Oneness
in being, Oneness in humanity, Oneness with nature, and Oneness with the
Universe. Simenon explains how despite the devastating and often overwhelming
effects that greed and self-will run riot has on people, creatures and our
planet, we can play our part to bring about change. We need to embrace the
shadow side within, to learn to forgive, to treat others with love and respect,
and to spread the light of love and hope through all our daily interactions. As
each of us transforms our own spheres of influence, the force for positivity we
generate will gradually gain momentum and bring about change for good in a
world damaged by the forces of self, conflict and greed.
I borrowed a copy
of this book from the library of a Quaker meeting, after the author had sent
out promotional copies in January 2015. The subject matter particularly
appealed to me as I live by a similar belief in the power of changing the world
by each of us changing ourselves for the better. This belief had developed
through my past New Age experiences and my involvement in the Healing Ministry
in various local church communities over the years.
I came away from
this book feeling that my own beliefs had been reinforced, about the part each
of us can play to help change the world order a little through our daily
decisions and attitudes. I also felt sad that in our present world with the war
in Ukraine, and the economics of greed which are beggaring millions in the UK
and billions across the world, we need to redouble our efforts to bring
positive change. Now, more than ever, is the time to take up the author’s
challenge, to believe that we can make this world one and take part in ‘this
glorious work for all humanity’.
So there we have
it, January’s Book of the Month! Be sure to check back in February as I’ll be
revealing another must read.
Take care,
Maggie x
